ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – National Guard troops are assembling in south St. Louis, and, a day after Gov. Jay Nixon’s state of emergency declaration, you might think they’re preparing for potential Ferguson unrest.
But they’re not.
Maj. Christopher Ash tells KMOX News it is a civil support team doing regularly scheduled training exercises for a biological weapon situation.
“This has no bearing on Ferguson, whatsoever – just merely training and refining our skills,” he says.
The team is a Weapons of Mass Destruction Response Force, Ash says, and it responds in the event there is a chemical-biological incident. This time, they were practicing their skills in an urban environment.
Ash says the team does this training at least once a month and goes to various parts of the state.
